Modern American Dance Company (MADCO) announced the first Main Stage performances of the 2021-22 season lineup.

November 19 & 20, 2021 -

MADCO will present RESILIENCE on November 19th at 7:30 pm and November 20th at 2 pm and 7:30 pm at Washington University’s Edison Theatre. This performance will showcase a collection of new and revisited works by choreographers Carl Flink, Natalie Williams, and RAWdance.

Carl Flink’s original work, Riding the Maelstrom, was originally created and set on MADCO in the spring of 2020 and will make its debut in the November concert. In this piece, Flink explores the high intensity and swirling chaos of his own personal experience as he witnessed and supported a parent going through cancer treatment. This rich background has led him to create a dance work that seeks to capture the essence of individuals experiencing the rollercoaster ride of cancer treatments and, in particular, their resilience.

Natalie Williams’ piece, A Magnificent Grey, captures the various ways humans experience grief. The movement is a physical interpretation of an emotional response endured in unexpected life changes. This work is heavily based on the capacity to accept supportive relationships, develop trust, and find the strength to recover quickly from difficulties.

Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein, Co-Artistic Directors of RAWdance, choreographed Art is a Guarantee of Sanity for MADCO in 2017. Vibrating with tension and filled with luscious dancing, the piece navigates a path through an eerie, harrowing world in which our minds sometimes betray us. The work draws on the autobiographical story of Susannah Cahalan (Brain on Fire), the imagery of Louise Bourgeois, and the music of SF-based composer Surabhi Saraf.

In collaboration with Natalie Williams, MADCO dancers Belicia Beck and Darrell Hyche will present a remastering of their work, miles (dia)logged. Inspired by Celeste Headlee’s TED Talk, “10 Ways to Have a Conversation,” this piece attempts to navigate the joys, frustrations, and challenges of human contact and communication.

After the setbacks of the pandemic, MADCO is thrilled to finally debut RESILIENCE. Originally set to perform in March 2020, RESILIENCE was only ten days out of production when the pandemic forced cancellations. RESILIENCE aims to create trauma-informed arts programming to battle adversity through movement in St. Louis city and surrounding counties with education, community outreach, and main stage performances. Tickets can be purchased at madcodance.com/tickets.
