LONG BEACH, CA - Senior running back Anthony League led Millikan High School to a resounding 50-14 victory over Carson in their home opener on Thursday night. League's exceptional performance, which included four touchdowns and 179 rushing yards on just 15 carries, showcased why he's considered one of the top running backs in the region and a prized recruit for the University of California, Berkeley.
The game, held at DeHaven Stadium, marked a significant turnaround for the Rams following their season-opening loss to Newbury Park. League's explosive plays and consistent production were instrumental in helping Millikan establish an early lead and maintain control throughout the contest.
From the opening drive, League's impact was evident. He scored the game's first touchdown, setting the tone for what would be a dominant offensive display. The Rams' aggressive strategy was further highlighted by a successful onside kick recovery, which led to League's second touchdown, putting Millikan up 14-0 early in the first quarter.
"Anthony League's performance tonight was nothing short of spectacular," said Romeo Pellum, head coach of the Millikan High School football team. "His ability to make big plays and his leadership on the field were crucial to our success. This game really demonstrated why he's such a special player and why he's garnered attention from top college programs."
League's touchdowns came at pivotal moments throughout the game. His first two scores in the opening half helped Millikan build a commanding 28-14 lead by halftime. As Carson attempted to mount a comeback, League's final two touchdowns in the second half effectively sealed the victory for the Rams, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.
The 6'1", 205-pound running back's performance was not just about his scoring prowess. League demonstrated his versatility, contributing in the passing game with key receptions that kept drives alive. His agility and speed were on full display as he consistently broke tackles and outran defenders.
"I'm just grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our team's success," Anthony League commented after the game. "Our offensive line did an incredible job, and our defense really stepped up. This win was a total team effort, and it sets a great tone for the rest of our season. We learned a lot from our opening game, and it feels great to see our hard work pay off."
League's dominant performance comes as no surprise to those who have followed his high school career. As a junior at Los Alamitos High School last season, he amassed 995 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on just 104 carries, averaging an impressive 9.6 yards per carry. His transfer to Millikan for his senior year has clearly elevated the Rams' offensive capabilities.
The victory over Carson not only showcases League's individual talents but also highlights Millikan's potential for a strong season. The team's balanced attack, featuring quarterback JP Miovsky's efficient passing game and a stout defense that shut out Carson in the final three quarters, suggests that the Rams will be a formidable opponent in their upcoming games.
Millikan's next challenge will be to maintain this momentum as they prepare to host Downey next week. The game will take place at Millikan High School, located at 2800 Snowden Ave, Long Beach, CA 90815, and is expected to draw significant attention from local football enthusiasts and college scouts alike.
As League continues to impress on the field, his commitment to the University of California, Berkeley for the 2025 class remains a topic of interest. His performance against Carson serves as a reminder of why he's considered a key part of Cal's future plans and a player to watch in the coming years.
