LONG BEACH, CA - Millikan High School senior running back Anthony League has opened up about his recruitment journey, which culminated in his commitment to the University of California, Berkeley (Cal) for the 2025 class. League's path to becoming a Golden Bear was marked by multiple offers from prestigious programs and a swift decision that surprised many in the college football world.
League, a 6'1", 205-pound versatile player known for his speed and agility, garnered attention from several top-tier programs during his recruitment process. Notable offers came from Yale, Washington, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon State, Utah, and BYU, showcasing the wide interest in League's talents across different conferences.
"The recruitment process was both exciting and challenging," Anthony League reflected. "Each program offered unique opportunities, and I'm grateful for the interest they showed in me. It was a journey that taught me a lot about myself and what I value in a college program."
Despite the array of options, League's connection with Cal's coaching staff, particularly running backs coach Aristotle Thompson, played a crucial role in his decision. The academic prestige of Cal and the family-like atmosphere among the running backs and overall program were key factors that set Cal apart.
"Coach Thompson's philosophy resonated with me from our first interaction," League explained. "The way Cal balances academic excellence with athletic ambition aligns perfectly with my goals. It felt like the right fit almost immediately."
In a move that caught many by surprise, League committed to Cal just one day after receiving their offer on May 22, 2024. This quick decision speaks to the strong impression made by the Cal program and the clarity of League's vision for his future.
Romeo Pellum, head coach of the Millikan High School football team, commented on League's recruitment process: "Anthony approached his recruitment with the same focus and determination he brings to the field. He carefully considered each offer and made a decision that best suits his aspirations both as an athlete and a student."
League's commitment to Cal comes on the heels of an impressive junior year at Los Alamitos High School, where he rushed for 995 yards on 104 carries, scoring 13 touchdowns with an average of 9.6 yards per carry. His performance has continued to impress in his senior year at Millikan, including a recent four-touchdown game against Carson.
"Anthony's recruitment journey is a testament to his character and potential," said William League, Anthony's father. "We're proud of how he handled the process and excited about his future at Cal. The combination of top-tier academics and competitive football program is exactly what we were hoping for."
As part of Cal's 2025 recruiting class, League is poised to bring his versatility and proven performance to Berkeley. His ability to excel as both a running back and linebacker in high school adds depth to his potential contributions at the collegiate level.
In addition to his athletic prowess, League's commitment to academics has been a significant factor in his decision-making process. Known for maintaining a strong GPA, he has balanced the demands of rigorous training with academic responsibilities, a testament to his discipline and time management skills.
"Anthony's ability to excel in both academics and athletics is a testament to his discipline and work ethic," noted a Millikan High School academic advisor. "He serves as a role model for other student-athletes who aspire to achieve success in all areas of their lives."
The coaching staff at Cal, including running backs coach Aristotle Thompson, is eager to welcome League to the program, recognizing his potential to contribute both on and off the field. "Anthony's dedication to his craft and his ability to perform under pressure are qualities that will serve him well at the next level," said a Cal recruiting coordinator. "We're excited to see how he develops as a player and a student at Cal."
