UPLAND, CA - Millikan High School's football team bounced back from their season-opening loss with a convincing 37-27 victory over Upland High School. Senior running back Anthony League continued his impressive start to the season, playing a pivotal role in the Rams' success.
Anthony League demonstrated his consistency and endurance, rushing for 158 yards on 22 carries and scoring two touchdowns. His performance was instrumental in Millikan's dominant ground game, which accumulated over 300 rushing yards as a team.
Millikan head coach Romeo Pellum praised Anthony League's efforts, stating, "Anthony's contributions were crucial to our success tonight. His ability to consistently gain yards and find the end zone sets the tone for our entire offense. This kind of performance is what we've come to expect from him."
The game also saw standout performances from other Millikan players, including Xavier Jones, who complemented Anthony League's ground attack with 133 yards and two touchdowns on just nine carries. This two-pronged rushing attack proved too much for the Upland defense to handle.
Millikan's victory over Upland, a respected Division 2 team, serves as a confidence booster as they prepare to enter league play. The Rams' ability to control the game on the ground bodes well for their chances in the competitive Moore League.
Anthony League's performance in the first two games of the season has established him as a key player to watch in Southern California high school football. His combination of speed, power, and field vision has made him a formidable opponent for any defense.
The Rams' offensive line deserves recognition for their role in the team's rushing success. Their ability to create running lanes and provide protection has been instrumental in allowing League and Jones to showcase their talents.
The game began with both teams trading scores in the first quarter. League made his presence felt early, breaking several tackles on a 15-yard touchdown run to put Millikan on the board. His ability to fight through contact and maintain balance set the tone for his performance throughout the night.
As the game progressed, Anthony League's impact became increasingly evident. His consistent gains on first and second downs kept the Rams offense in favorable situations, allowing them to control the tempo of the game. This strategy proved effective in wearing down the Upland defense as the game went on.
One of Anthony League's most impressive plays came in the third quarter when he broke free for a 32-yard touchdown run. This score put Millikan ahead for good and showcased League's ability to deliver in crucial moments.
Coach Pellum commented on Anthony League's clutch performance, "Anthony has a knack for making big plays when we need them most. That long touchdown run in the third quarter really shifted the momentum in our favor. It's not just his physical abilities, but his football IQ and competitive spirit that make him such a valuable player."
Anthony League's success on the ground opened up opportunities for Millikan's passing game as well. The threat of his running forced Upland to commit additional defenders to the box, creating favorable matchups for Millikan's receivers.
Defensively, Millikan made key stops when it mattered most, particularly in the fourth quarter as Upland attempted to mount a comeback. The Rams' ability to get off the field on third downs allowed them to get the ball back into the hands of their potent offense.
As the game wound down, Anthony League's endurance became evident. He continued to run hard and pick up crucial first downs, helping Millikan run out the clock and secure the victory.
Looking ahead, Millikan's coaching staff expressed optimism about the team's potential, particularly with League leading the way on offense. His consistent production and leadership by example have set a high standard for the entire team.
As Millikan prepares for their upcoming Moore League opener against Cabrillo High School, they will look to build on this strong non-league performance. The team's ground game, spearheaded by League, will likely continue to be a focal point of their offensive strategy.
Millikan High School, founded in 1956, has long been known for its strong academic programs and competitive athletics. The school's football program, under Coach Pellum's guidance, continues to uphold this tradition of excellence, competing at the highest levels of Southern California high school football.
