March 18, 2016 - PRESSADVANTAGE -
The Village of Cambridge, New York is celebrating its 150th anniversary. At the same time, the volunteer fire department is also celebrating its 150 years. The Village of Cambridge Sesquicentennial Commission has been formed by Mayor Carman Bogle, and a number of events have been planned. Details about the events and more can be found on the village's website on http://cambridgeny.gov.
Trustee James Sweeney says: "There is a lot of excitement over this celebration. This will be a great opportunity for the Fire Department to re-ignite their fund raising efforts for a desperately needed new Fire House."
On April 16th, the event will kick off in Memorial Park. Thirty-six star American flags will be raised at library, fire department and village offices. These have been generously donated by American Legion Captain Maxon Post #634. Commemorative coins are also being produced by the Historical Society. A season long scavenger hunt will also begin on the said date.
In May, a student art contest for the design of street banners will be held in partnership with Hubbard Hall. The annual flower planting will also commence. In June, the sesquicentennial painting by artist Dan Turcotte will be put on display and raffled by the Fire Department. The Lions Club car show will also take place in June.
On July 16th, a historical-themed float parade, sponsored by the Fire Department, will take place, followed by a muster competition. Over 100 fire departments will be asked to participate in the competition. In addition, a block party and picnic will take place on Main Street, followed by an evening street dance with fireworks.
People are encouraged to like the village's Facebook page on https://www.facebook.com/VillageofCambridgeNY. This will give them an opportunity to be kept up to date with the various events and other activities. Additionally, they can share their own stories about the village.
The Village of Cambridge is an eclectic community in which families, artists, business people, retired people and many others congregate. Many people have fallen in love with the small town atmosphere of the village, while it remains located centrally with access to bigger towns and cities, and some of the best scenery in New York.
