Manhattan Beach, CA based Cancer Journeys Foundation is holding a year-long bicycling competition where men and women can win King and Queen of the Mountain jerseys similar to those won during professional cycling competitions like the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. Participants make a small donation to compete and then get to ride their chosen course as many times as they like during the year. The fastest cyclists for each segment on December 31 2020 win a coveted polka dot jersey. The competition is open to riders around the world, and Cancer Journeys Foundation will be accepting cycling segment submissions until the 1st of May 2020.

The winners of the competition demonstrate the #NeverGiveUp spirit that cancer survivors need in order to beat the disease. The Cancer Journeys Foundation hands out the polka-dotted jerseys as recognition of the winners’ perseverance and commitment, qualities that the Cancer Journeys Foundation values and encourages. Those interested in participating but who find themselves unable to attend the Virginia event are encouraged to join for a chance to get their hands on the coveted polka dot jersey. The Cancer Journeys Foundation is an organization that strives to give cancer survivors the tools they need to deal with the aftermath of cancer. “Hearing the words “you have cancer” is a devastating experience,” the organization says. “Those words begin a journey that will last a lifetime, a cancer survivorship journey. As of January 2019, there were 16.9 million Americans living with cancer in the United States, and that number is projected to increase to just over 18 million by 2020, only a year away. If there is good news in the cancer story, it is that cancer survivors are living longer. Part of this is due to earlier detection, part to better treatment and in part to lifestyle changes by survivors themselves that allow their immune systems to more effectively battle their cancer.”

Many cancer survivors find that support from their medical team stops once they are cancer free, and they are often left on their own with no real support from other parties. While the cancer may be gone, the process of recovery is still difficult to endure, and many people are left to go through it all alone. This is where the Cancer Journeys Foundation comes in. Founded by Robert Hess, a cancer survivor, the foundation has been providing cancer survivors with the support they need to get through the recovery process for years.

Over the course of the 10+ years that Hess has been a cancer survivor, research has revealed that there is no structured post-treatment program for cancer survivors and their caregivers. He opened the foundation with the mission of creating a central digital hub of survivorship information. The ‘no one left behind’ ethos Hess picked up during his time in the US army is the central guiding principle behind the foundation. “Cancer affects us all. Every family in America,” observes the foundation. “The Cancer Journeys Foundation provides cancer survivors and their caregivers the information and support they need to develop and implement effective survivorship plans and move forward with their lives.”

Hess has been honored twice at the Los Angeles Times Business Journal Health Leadership Awards for his prostate cancer advocacy. In 2015, he was chosen as a National Cancer Champion by the Amgen Corporation’s Breakaway from Cancer program. Through the many foundations, organizations and projects he has worked on, he has helped many cancer survivors work through the aftermath of cancer treatment.

With the Cancer Journeys Foundation, one can contribute meaningfully to improving the lives of cancer survivors. The foundation’s website has a great deal of information for cancer survivors, or those currently fighting cancer, that is aimed at improving their lives and increasing their chances of beating the disease, both physically and psychologically. The King and Queen of The Mountain Competition is just one of the many ways in which one can get involved and help. Read more at https://alpineloopgranfondo.com/.
