Elance is a site that connects freelance workers to business owners who wish to get projects done. Of note, Elance has now partnered with Odesk to form the freelancing website called Upwork. Recently the blog for Elance featured an article entitled “Trends in Freelancing: Spotlight on Jamaica” that was written by a Jamaican freelancer Marsha Buchanan. The blog post showed that Jamaica is ripe for capitalizing on opportunities for online freelancing and Internet Income Jamaica was paving the way by teaching people.
The blog went on to explain that Jamaica was in a brutal economic climate with a high unemployment rate and so Jamaicans couldn’t afford to sit idly by and leave out the business of making a living. Despite these challenges, according to the article, Jamaica is “ranked on the Forbes list as the top Caribbean country and the third overall in Latin America for doing business.”
The blog further remarked that the internet penetration of Jamaica reaching 37.8 percent was a good indicator that online work was an opportunity for hopeful entrepreneurs. According to the article, another indicator is the number of persons who turn out for “the Internet Income Jamaica workshops run by the Lyttle sisters Alicia and Lorette.”
The article further explained that aside from the Digital Jam 2.0 seminar, which was launched by the World Bank, The Jamaican Government and the ICT sector, these workshops from Internet Income Jamaica are the most influential program to introduce more freelancing entrepreneurs to the market.
According to the article, the “participants are taught how to market themselves on job sites by writing winning proposals or putting together excellent profiles that can help them land jobs. Teachers, security guards, students and even television personalities have gone to the boot camp and report that it works.”
