These teams operate in environments with a high incidence of trauma, and most (two-thirds) of preventable deaths are from extremity bleeding. SWAT for the tourniquet stands for Stretch Wrap And Tuck, and it was intended to mirror the same acronym in use by police forces around the world. The quick-use emergency tourniquet can be applied immediately and high in the groin or armpit area to stop arterial bleeding.
"This tourniquet was developed out of a need for something you could have in the field and deploy fast in the case of a serious bleeding emergency," says First Aid Shoppe COO, Anna Loehwing. "We package it in a small kit you can keep with you just about anywhere, and include in the kit just what you need to handle a bleeding threat on the scene."
The ResQue 1st Trauma Kit With SWAT-T Tourniquet allows a very rapid means of controlling extremity bleeding, and it can be applied higher into the groin and armpit areas than other tourniquets. Ease of application is one of its benefits; individuals can effectively apply it in seconds with little to no training. The kit also includes an Advanced Clotting Sponge, a contact clotting sponge that accelerates clotting when applied directly to the source of the wound. Gloves, tape, gauze and other items to handle bleeding are also part of the kit.
"This fits just about anywhere," says Ms. Loehwing. "It's meant to be part of a more general purpose first aid kit, or simply to be on hand for that serious emergency where someone is going to bleed out if they aren't stabilized until help can arrive."
The SWAT tourniquet in First Aid Shoppe’s emergency trauma kit is in use by police response teams worldwide and is named after their SWAT units.
