AbuseGuardian.com reports on the guilty plea and sentencing of a former Washington DC police officer for the sexual abuse of 2 teenagers. The officer also served as a church pastor and was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Friday, February 26th, 2016 in federal court.
The two victims attended his Southeast Washington church, God-A Second Chance Ministry Church, and were ages 16 and 17. The former officer was a 25 year veteran of the DC police force and, in October, pled guilty to one count of first-degree sexual abuse of a minor, one count of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor and one count of production of child pornography. He allegedly abused one teen in his office at the police headquarters and one girl at his church. The authorities were notified when the man’s fiancée discovered pictures of one of the victims on his phone and then confronted her parents.
The former pastor’s attorney, Nikki Lotze, stated on Friday that her client is “very remorseful” and is “glad to be putting this behind him.” D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier stated that she is “hopeful the sentencing . . . provides some measure of comfort for these victims and their families.”
Sexual abuse is an act of power and violence in which a person of authority uses their power to coerce a victim into unwanted sexual acts. Many victims suffer from feelings of guilt and shame which can make reporting incidents to the authorities extremely difficult. Often times, victims delay reporting or never contact the police at all. According to RAINN, 68% of sexual assaults go unreported, and 44% of victims are under the age of 18.
