AbuseGuardian.com reports on a group of high school students who were very upset by an assembly they attended which aimed to educate the teens on domestic violence and rape. Students at Humble High School in Texas planned the assembly as part of International Women’s Day on March 8th.
The school had a speaker come in from a local charity to speak on the topics of teen dating violence, sexual assault awareness, and healthy relationships. The first assembly was scheduled in the morning for the 9th and 10th graders while a second was scheduled for the upperclassmen in the afternoon. The presentation ended prematurely when staff noticed students becoming visibly upset, even crying, and stopped the speaker from finishing. Several students were upset that boys were not invited to join the assembly and the district confirmed that the speaker did address how the girls dress. Some of the girls mentioned that there were victims of rape present, and they believed that the message being presented was misguided.
The district released a statement which informed the public that permission slips were signed prior to the teens attending the presentation, but, once teachers noticed the reactions of several students, the assembly was ended. They stated that the show was not repeated for the upperclassmen that afternoon.
Attorney Brian Kent understands the importance of educating the public regarding sexual assault, abuse, and domestic violence. He and his firm Laffey Bucci & Kent sponsor the online resource website AbuseGuardian.com in order to assist by educating the public. Kent comments on the students’ response to the assembly by stating, “The topic of domestic violence and sexual abuse is not an easy subject for anyone to discuss, let alone for minors. While it is important that society is aware of this rising issue in the United States in order to work to prevent it, it is necessary to stress that it is never the victim’s fault and that everyone needs to contribute to the prevention of this problem.” The firm is currently representing several clients in claims of sexual assault.
