Sexual Assault Lawyer Comments On British Airways Agreement To Pay Compensation

AbuseGuardian.com reports on an agreement made by British Airways to pay compensation to victims of sexual abuse by one of their pilots. The airline has denied liability but has agreed to pay an undisclosed amount to 38 victims, all children and young females from East Africa, who were allegedly sexually assaulted by one of their pilots.

The 54-year-old pilot who was charged with sexually assaulting children during stopovers between 2003 and 2013 was found dead of an apparent suicide days before he was scheduled to appear in court. Nichola Marshall, who represents the victims, stated, “For three years we have been fighting for compensation for these young girls, whose childhoods were destroyed by the sexual abuse they were subjected to . . .” She continued to describe how the money will help the victims to continue with their education, which was disrupted due to the abuse, and will allow them to access treatment to relieve some of their mental anguish. She also commented on the compensation hoping to send a message to organizations that work with and volunteer with children. She hopes that they will put certain safeguards in place to protect the children’s innocence.

According to the National Center for Victims of Crime, children who experience sexual abuse may develop low self-esteem, feelings of worthlessness, and an abnormal or distorted view of sex. Victims of sexual abuse are substantially more likely to be re-victimized later in life. Side effects experienced by victims can be wide-ranging and last for undetermined lengths of time.

Brian Kent, Esq. of the firm Laffey Bucci & Kent understands the tremendous suffering victims of sexual abuse often endure. He comments on British Airways’ compensation agreement by stating, “Our society has a responsibility to not only advocate for and support victims but to work to prevent future assaults from occurring. The alleged victims of these horrific crimes have likely endured a great amount of suffering, and I hope that this monetary compensation can help them to begin the healing process as they rebuild their lives.” Kent and his firm have years of experience in recovering compensation for victims of sexual assault so that they may begin to heal after such terrible violations. He and his firm sponsor the online resource AbuseGuardian.com and are currently representing several clients in claims of sexual assault.
