AbuseGuardian.com reports on a recent lawsuit which is being filed by a former Boy Scout against the Boy Scouts of America. The plaintiff claims Boy Scouts of America did not do anything to prevent the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of a scout leader.

The former scout, who is now 19, told Channel 2 in an interview that when he was just 12-years-old his mother found sexually suggestive text messages on his phone from the Assistant Scoutmaster. The Savannah Boy Scout organization allegedly did nothing when the mother reported her findings, according to Channel 2, and allegedly never did a background check on the leader to prevent this type of incident from occurring.

The scout leader was arrested in 2011 and was charged with sexually assaulting multiple children, some who were not scouts, from 2006-2011. He was found guilty and is currently serving a 52-year sentence. The Boy Scouts of America announced in a statement that the convicted leader was, “removed from Scouting in 2011 and has been barred from future participation . . .” For the victims of this offender, this news comes too late. The former boy scout is now suing the Boy Scouts of America claiming they should have been proactive in preventing abuse. He states, “It took a huge part of my life away. It didn’t have to happen.” He is seeking punitive damages for mental and physical pain, and for past and future lost salary.

Attorney Brian Kent understands the seriousness of the effects that sexual abuse can have on victims and their families. He comments on the lawsuit by stating, “Children are some of our society’s most vulnerable members, and we have an obligation to do everything in our power to keep them safe. It is necessary for organizations to follow strict procedures and policies to prevent abusers from gravitating to these types of positions of authority, and from harming children.” Kent and his firm have years of experience recovering compensation for victims so that they may begin to heal after such terrible violations. The firm sponsors the online resource AbuseGuardian.com and is currently representing several clients in claims of sexual assault.
