AbuseGuardian.com reports on the arrest of an Iowa man on Thursday, March 10th, 2016 who has been charged with third-degree sexual abuse for the alleged assault of a woman he took on a Tinder date.

The Bettendorf man met the alleged victim on the dating app, and the two reportedly agreed to go out to a dinner and movie on December 20th, 2015. While on the date, the man allegedly asked the woman to perform oral sex on him and she declined. He then allegedly drove to a parking lot near the restaurant and began to kiss and touch the woman. She reported to police that he bit her neck and began to choke her to the point where she found it difficult to breathe. He then reportedly forced her to have sex with him, despite her efforts to fight him off. Police state that the suspect admitted to having sex with and choking the alleged victim, but stated that he was never told no and that he was “gently choking” her. He is currently being held in Johnson County Jail and faces a charge that is punishable by up to 10 years in jail.

Tinder is a dating app that is downloaded onto users’ smartphones and allows them to view multiple profiles of potential dating ‘matches’. The user is able to swipe right if they are interested in dating the person in the profile, or swipe left to decline. If both users swipe right on one another’s profiles they are then able to message each other. Connections are only allowed to be made if each user mutually selects the other person.

Attorney Brian Kent understands how devastating the effects of sexual abuse can be. He and his firm, Laffey Bucci & Kent, are devoted to protecting the dignity, safety, and on-going security of each of their clients. Kent commented on this arrest by stating, “Victims of sexual violence need to know that they are not at fault. Victims may have a long road to recovery, but it is my hope that they can find some peace in justice being served and an effort being made to prevent further abuse from occurring.” Kent and his firm sponsor the online resource AbuseGuardian.com and are currently representing several clients in claims of sexual assault.
