AbuseGuardian.com reports on a Michigan wrestling coach who was sentenced on Thursday, March 4th, 2016 to 15-40 years in prison for two counts of first-degree criminal sexual misconduct and another 10-15 years for second-degree criminal sexual misconduct.

The 21-year-old coach was convicted of molesting a 13-year-old boy on his wrestling team, and lying to the community that he had cancer in an attempt to obtain donation money. He lied to family, friends, and the wrestling team, telling them that he was diagnosed with leukemia, even going so far as to shave his head to look as if he was going through chemotherapy and creating a fake doctors note. Multiple fundraisers were set up to raise money to assist with his medical bills. Since his arrest, his family members have returned significant portions of the money to the donors and will be donating the remaining money, whose donors couldn’t be identified, to charity. The coach was charged and sentenced to 23 months to five years in prison for identity theft and false pretenses for lying about a leukemia diagnosis.

The victim of sexual assault has suffered greatly and must live with the fact that his offender has tattooed his name onto his chest. The victim wrote a letter asking the judge to give his offender a life sentence. He spoke to his offender in the letter saying, “I hope after your sentence, the next time I hear your name it’s someone telling me you died.”

Childhood sexual abuse can have long-term effects on children that stem into adulthood. Studies have shown that sexual abuse suffered as a child can significantly and negatively impact mental health into adulthood, causing numerous potential ailments such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, anxiety, substance and alcohol abuse, personality disorders, suicide attempts, and many more.

Attorney Brian Kent understands the devastation that sexual abuse can cause victims and their families. He commented on the conviction of the coach stating: “The victims of such terrible violations need advocates who can support and fight for their best interests. I hope that this sentencing can provide some peace and allow the survivor to begin the healing process.” Kent and his firm are devoted to protecting the dignity, safety, and on-going security of each client. The firm sponsors an online resource website at AbuseGuardian.com and is currently representing several individuals in claims of sexual assault.
